In support of Black youth, Black creators, and Black-owned businesses, the streaming giant has announced it will be donating $5 million to the Black community, which follows a recent big donation Netflix offered to help staff affected by abolished productions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Netflix chairman and CEO Reed Hastings explained in a statement: “Tackling racism and injustice in meaningful ways means creating long-term opportunities for the Black community. The main role we play is through our funding of and member viewing of important content like When They See Us. As an additional step, today we’re committing $5 million to nonprofits dedicated to creating direct opportunities for Black creators, Black youth, and Black-owned businesses.”
The initial donation will start at $3 million, and $1.5 million pledged will go to Black Public Media, Ghetto Film School and Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp. Another $1 million will help support Know Your Rights Camp, the Posse Foundation, and Black Girls Code, while $500,000 will be going to Black-owned businesses.
